On 1 October, Bavarian International School's Academic Director, Chrissie Sorenson announced an end to negotiations with the Ver.di Tarifkommission (negotiating committee). Alongside the Chair of the School Board, employees were told that negotiations were over, and that the latest management proposal would be put into place in October. This disregards the work that union members have done over months of negotiations, and precludes any collective bargaining agreement.
Management would like to negotiate with the Betriebsrat (Works Council), as they have done in the past. This puts all employees at a disadvantage, as it creates only a "gentleman's agreement" on salaries that can be changed at any time- or, as historically is the case, not changed. This has lead to real wage decreases at BIS, and this is why so many employees joined a union last year.
We encourage Dr. Sorenson to do the right thing and return to negotiations. A majority of BIS employees want this. Will Dr. Sorenson listen?
